Pioneer in Providing Direction to the Best in Healthcare.
In 1994, a small group started GeoAccess and worked diligently to develop the original geocoding and maps to assist consumers in finding the nearest doctor in their healthcare network. It was a privilege to be offered a position as a website developer with GeoAccess in 1998.
“Being on the cutting edge of internet innovation was challenging, but exciting and the unique work environment made it fun.”
As a website developer I designed new websites and complex data manipulations using technologies such as ASP, SQL, HTML, CSS and JavaScript. The position required managing many development projects simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines. Team members had to work closely together utilizing a proprietary code infrastructure to create cutting edge functionality for managed healthcare companies.
Communication is Key
I enjoyed the challenge of coding, but began to find communication flaws in such a fast paced, innovative business. For example, there was poor communication between the sales team and the developers. The functionality that was being sold had never been done before and the sales team would promise the customer a completion date that was not feasible. This would cause frustration if deadlines weren’t met, or if the site was not completed with full functionality by the deadline. I started to champion for improved communication and process changes with management. I suggested dedicated meetings with representatives of each department – sales, project managers, server-side and front end developers – to discuss what sales was seeing with customer requests and to allow our development team to establish realistic technical expectations as well as present creative ideas that customers may find beneficial. This improved communication allowed us to better meet our deadlines and improved the overall relationship between sales and development. In just over a year from my start date, I was offered a manager role due to success in recognizing the issues and successfully implementing the necessary changes.
